No, we don't have charter of rights and freedoms in this country.
In the first place, the charter was a proposed constitutional amendment. Constitutional amendments require unanimous consent of the provinces. Quebec never consented to these amendments. Therefore, they were never effective.
Second, even if you don't buy that, the courts immediately repudiated the charter. The courts have held consistently since 1985 that the charter is of no effect, does not bind judges, and need not be referred to.

Then we should have no problem refuting those who claim charter rights! No ... I'm pretty sure that quite a few judges at various levels have made rulings that referred to the charter. So that means what the judiciary wants to accept they do and what they dispute or find inconvenient they reject.
It's no relief to be at the mercy of the judiciary ......
We do need and deserve protection from this sort of abuse by governments.
