For American voters .... especially Conservative American Voters .... the real problem is not choosing between Newt and Mitt.

The problem is that they are being denied any other choice. So ... from the GOP caucuses to next year the die is cast. There are big consequences looming for everyone and these clowns think the whole show is about them and what they want.

When Mama Bear has to step in and explain to the brats where they are going wrong ..... you know there is a problem.
It is a very real problem .... the Washington Establishment is the reason that an asshole like Barack Obama can become president .... the reason why FannyMae and FreddyMac got bankrupted .... the reason why those companies and others like Goldman Sachs and General Motors get to suck the blood out of American taxpayers and avoid the consequences of their own greed and incompetence.... and on .... and on it goes.

Americans are being force fed still MORE Washington insiders as the only choices in the upcoming election thanks to the GOP establishment ... and there is probably nothing they can do about it.

Except of course get behind every Tea Party candidate coming up for Senate and Congress ... and state election.

It's bad enough that liberals thrive on and depend on the insider establishment to hold onto power and influence. It is a thousand times WORSE when the supposed alternative to the architects of destruction fall into the same behaviours.

What America needs is an enema administered to the capitol.

Just a passing chance today that I caught a bit of the Sun TV news financial segment.
Now I do not know who the guy was who they had on presenting himself as an authority but I can lay out for you what he had to say...
The subject was this weeks status quo interest rate non-story and the fact that 1% is a hell of a low prime rate. Among much speculation about the potential for either raising or lowering of the Canadian prime this joker offered the viewers this little nugget from his ... ahem .... mind?
Mr. expert .. opined that the banks like higher interest rates ... because ... they make more money when the prime is higher!

Prime Rate History

Yup! Sure they do sparky .... like when they charge 5% interest on money they pay 1% for? That's a 500% markup by the way. So ... Mr. expert ..... when the prime is ... let's say 4% and the banks mark it up to say 7% .... then you say that is more profit? Or perhaps sparky can actually cite some example where a Canadian Bank marked up the prime MORE than they are doing in today's environment?

Not friggin likely sparky...........

So called expert seems to be both unaware that there are limits to how many points the lenders can get away with adding to borrowed money. Historically .... a few points is about it and the higher the base or prime rate the smaller the margin. Apparently ... Mr. Expert hasn't been around long enough to recall primes that were in the double digits... or ... even what a 5% base rate from the central bank looked like in the lending market.

The last time prime rate started pushing toward double digits banks were lending at 1 point above prime.

Ignorant and innumerate .... some EXPERT you got there SUN TV!

Thinking About Cars ... and Auto Journalism

There's some rumors running around that Ford is planning to re-introduce a four cylinder engine to the Mustang lineup.

To me this seems like "Deja Vu ... all over again.." (borrowing an old Yogi-ism ). Basically ... remembering these horrendous failures :
Mustang II - possibly the worst car ever made
EXP - The evolutionary joke
Early Fox Bodied Mustangs with four bangers

The Merkur - a quirky misfit with some redeeming qualities in the performance and handling departments
The SVO Turbo - which was not all bad either ... but still a failure as a true performance/enthusiast car

However, the thing that gets me about this train of thought in motoring design/marketing is that it follows the behaviour that leads to the most common trap that North American car companies are prone to find themselves in. The error they make is in thinking that the opinions of motor journalists, who are grasping for something to write about and thus justify their existence, are a sound source of ideas that need to be developed. This is essentially a failure of vision in the design/engineering and product development groups, but the willingness of the marketing people to embrace the perceived wisdom of the chattering cretins in the press combined with the executive office willingness to be guided by false assumptions about what public demand is really based on ... sadly ... seems to wind up on the showroom floors.
Why this bothers me is that it is instead of being offered vehicles that actually are better we ... the automobile buying public ... get crap shoved at us with the attitude that we ... as in you and I ... are too stupid to know what we want or what is good for us. In the process of getting to this point the manufacturers waste hundreds of millions of dollars that could be otherwise used to actually make their products better. The fact that they continue to do this time after time is one of the reasons I have never invested in auto manufacturers and is also one of the reasons the so called Big Three are in the financial state that they are today.

As in the 70s and the 80s the cycle of car development is once again being impacted by the government meddling and arbitrary regulations being imposed by people who simply have no idea what they are doing but are bent on doing it anyway... hang the cost and screw the consequences. The auto company brass are cravenly eager to placate the meddlesome pols and bureaucrats .... foolishly pandering to demands they imagine the public to making.

Hence .... once again ... the Four Cylinder Mustang idea.

Now ... realistically ... the current mustang is a bloated little lump of steel and plastic. It's not bad looking but it has NO SOUL. It is overweight for it's dimensions. It has terrible driver feedback and most of the power plants it comes with are weak feeling if not just sedated and unsuitable for a performance car. The reality of the Mustang is that it is a vehicle with bland characteristics and sporting pretensions. Of course ... if you lay out the cash for one of the high performance packages you do actually get some kickass horsepower. But what is the point of a car that is being sold as raucous driver satisfying beast when it fails to actually inspire? Looking at recent motor-press efforts ... they seem to be mightily confused about just what a Boss 302 or Cobra or GT is supposed to be ... how many of these dummies actually did comparisons between the Mustangs and BMWs?

Frankly ... I don't care how a car that is supposed to be a muscle car/ pony car/ hooligan ride compares to some Euro sedan that is sold primarily to wankers and their girlfriends. I don't really care what they use for a motor and I don't care what knob polishers in the motor-press think.
But ... let's assume for just one moment that the Ford guys were actually serious about producing a four cylinder Mustang. Let's also assume that the reasons for this would be to make the car better.
Then the underlying goals would seem to be less weight and better handling. Part of the rumor mill take on the supposed new mustang is also supposed to be Independent Rear Suspension... which is something that Ford should have made standard in the Mustang decades ago... and the overall benefits to the car and the driver experience would be a lighter and more responsive and more FUN car.
I would heartily approve a a lighter and more responsive car that is more fun to drive... wouldn't you? The speculation on the four banger and the tone from Ford seems to indicate that the four will be an especially potent little mill. All right ... let's say we have a quick revving four that kicks out some impressive numbers and actually has some character.
What is stopping Ford from putting the same character into the V6 or the V8s? The 6s and 8s are NOT currently free revving motors ... they are tuned for low and mid-range torque and have far too much flywheel plus they are severely rev limited ... all in the supposed name of "drivability" which is really marketing wonk code for safe and easy to drive. Same for the handling ... these cars all push the front end when driven hard and are overly soft. Again a lighter and more fun car could be built even with a four banger .... or the 6s or the 8s.

But sadly the guys at ford could have done this years ago by keeping the mustang lean and mean. There never was the need for this car to weigh in at the 3500 lb plus range ... even with the V8 engines. And most of all there never was a need to make the Mustang anything BUT a sports car. And that is the root of the problem.

Please ... DO ... give us a lighter and better handing Mustang ... but don't try to do it while shoving another four cylinder powerplant down our throats.

While I'm on the topic of motor sports and the motoring press ... I watched a few minutes of Motoring 2012 today. I've never really enjoyed the Motoring TV production because the show is much more of an effort to display and market the cars as products than to actually evaluate and inform in any meaningful way. But today ... one of the talking heads ... Jim Kenzie ... found the need to offer his opinion on the merits of building prisons versus the merits of the federal government regulating traffic safety programs. For the record ... Jim Kenzie clearly does not know what the hell is talking about and should stick to talking about cars .... keeping his political opinions to himself.

Also related ...

The word "bespoke" .... this seems to have cropped up in the last couple of years ... originating as far as I can tell in the British motoring press. The term itself refers to tailor made clothing ... specifically made to order men's clothing and suits. Somehow ... some person in the Automobile Journalism field though it would be clever to describe some car as "Bespoke" ... it seems to have caught on as well in marketing circles and is not limited to the auto industry. However, the frequency of the word "bespoke" appearing in articles related to the automobile and the enthusiast automobile is on the rise.

I think the guy or gal who first applied this esoteric little adjective was being somewhat original and witty. The trend seems to be leading to mindless copy cat repetition and misuse of the word as a pronoun which I find annoying and unnecessary.
In short ... most people you will see using this term are in fact nothing but pretentious knobs who have glommed onto something they think makes them sound more clever and intelligent than they will ever be.

A Cool take on a retro sport bike....

I'd definitely want to put some REAL tires on it before I'd try to ride it.

The RD 350 is a real sport bike .... in spite of it's age. Even a stock 350 can smoke the rear tire and break traction in corners at speed. Light weight and quick handling make you want to ride the little bike hard.

And even GOOD tires can be pushed to their limits by an RD 350.......

On the summer road trip we had some nice surprises along the way..... Peoria IL was a sleepy little city with a great waterfront walk along the Illinois River. The roadhouse restaurant and tavern just outside Lansing MI off I94 with the awesome sandwich platters. But the best find was a suprise in Indianapolis at the Speedway Golf Course Clubhouse. Indy has a lot to offer for dining out but this little clubhouse is so good and so reasonably priced it would be worth while to put it on the trip agenda anytime we find ourselves in the city.

Why the hell does my employer think that opening the plant and office for three days is a good idea?

This is beyond me................... the only reason I have for going to work for the next three days is that the policy also makes it mandatory.

If you don't show up or if you have not pre-booked vacation time (which can be denied at the management's whim) then you do not get paid for the statutory holiday (Jan 1st).

Besides the fact that I am a salaried employee it seems to me that if I choose to not go to work ... and give up the pay for those three days... then that should have not a damned thing to do with receiving the statutory pay.

Time for a new job !

VINTAGE motorcycle owners who have been gathering in Oxford's centre on Boxing Day for the last 45 years have been forced out by the council's heavy-handed parking enforcement contract.
The Oxford branch of the Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC) have met every year on Boxing Day to show off their motorcycles to locals and tourists before heading out to a pub in the countryside for lunch.
However, the club now find it hard to meet in Oxford due to free bank holiday parking being replaced by parking charges enforced by Oxford council's draconian parking officials, NCP.
The club have been shuffled from their original meeting point to increasingly cramped parking area, then a loading-only bay and the final straw came in 2010 when a minibus containing 10 parking wardens turned up and circled the group.

Nothing New under "The SUN"

As an unapologetic skeptic when it comes to anything in the mainstream media .... I was singularly unimpressed when intentions to launch the SUN News Network were announced .

True ... I was hoping that this development in Canadian broadcasting would provide some relief from the incessantly hopeless news reporting that we are subjected to every day. But, the mere fact that they were pitching their efforts as being a true counter point to the overwhelmingly liberal pregressivist (a cluge of progressivism-with a predisposition failure and objective regression) to social meddling of the MSM in general was something that caused a stir of hope. In the time since the first broadcasts I have gone from being a cheerleader to being a detractor and back on a weekly basis.
Still ... just because they are something more than just another shill for promoting urban liberal viewpoints and progressive ideology ... I continue to hope that they can and will mature into an actual NEWS organization.

However, this hope was slim to start and has been whittled down to a mere willingness to tolerate the flimsy and desperately thin news reportage at SUN TV. It seems that their news editors and producers are cut from the same cheap cloth as those who populate the news rooms of the other networks and the collection of talking heads dredged up from the Sun papers or other previous positions in Quebecor media studios are pretty damned unimpressive. The first thing that came to bother me was the very first day of broadcast when SUN TV producers chose to showcase Krista Erikson .... who I have not forgotten was at the heart of the ridiculous affair (while employed by CBC) of feeding questions and background to the LIberal buffoon Pablo Rodriguez during the Political Theatrics of Karl Heinz Schreiber hearings. Suffice to say that Krista continues to be an embarrassment to everyone dumb enough to associate with her. Let's face it .... Krista care about Krista and is quite capable of anything that she imagines will be good for her personal agenda. Too bad she can't put that much effort into doing an honest job.
But ... I digress .... there was not intention to go off on the failings of SUN news with regard to this one person. In truth .... the bright spots on SUN TV are still fairly interesting ... Ezra Levant seems to have an endless energy and ability to entertain while making a point. The morning news anchors are fairly lucent and capable ... the main problem for them being the lack of resources and actual news material to present and discuss. Adler remains .... as always ... a small time blowhard and bloviator who just manages once in while to make the effort to make a real point. When he does hit on something of substance he usually does the matter justice .... unfortunately ..... too few and far between to put up with the mindless blather he falls back on when he knows he has nothing to offer.

The ONE great failing of this news group though still remains in the back room and the production booth. The typical mindless repetition of whatever comes across the news wires and uncritical presentation of reports that are patently bullshit just irks me to hell and back.

For instance ... this week's credulous repetition on a UN report stating that 2011 has been the warmest year ever and continues to prove the unrelenting increase in global temperatures and all the usual BS that goes along with these propaganda releases from the climate hysteria crowd.

As if no one ever heard of the frauds that have been and continue to be perpetrated by the IPCC and their cadre of bought and paid for activists in the research business.

While the knobs behind the knobs at SUN TV seem to be able to get the facts straight when it comes to the supporting of any of the easily recognizable memes such as CBC waste and intransigence or occasionally identify some NDP buffoonery they remain painfully and patently incapable of understanding the difference between shit and shinola.

Being "Fair and Balanced" in no way obligates someone to be mindless and uncritical.

A remembrance day event in Ottawa has been cancelled for the time being because the school board bureaucrats have a "policy" on weapons.

Of course the policy they are talking about was obviously one of those post Columbine kneejerks which spread like wildfire across the world following that event.

I have long held the opinion that one of the reasons school boards and school administrations are so prone to taking politically correct stances and making them policy is that it provides an easy way to effect simple ass covering measures and avoid taking responsible positions that might have to be explained or actually thought about from time to time.

The Ottawa school decision is a perfect example of this. After all... guns are dangerous and children should be protected from danger. The school and the school board get to pretend they have done something noble by enacting the ban while simply creating a blind to hide behind in any issue that involves weapons. Now from behind the safety of their curtains (hear no evil - see no evil ....) they self righteously conflate a military commemoration and national tradition with an act of psychotic barbarism.

Of course ... in the world of the petty bureaucrat ... this is simply them being brave and firm in applying the "policy". A policy that quite obviously relieves them of any responsibility for the consequences of such blind enforcement .... quite conveniently.

Today the Government of Canada introduced a bill to scrap the long gun registry. A waste of resources and an unwarranted intrusion into the privacy of law abiding citizens.

But those who work with homicide victims disagree.

"Snowmobiles have to be registered. Our cars have to be registered. I don't see anything wrong with the gun registry at all," said Holly Kolevris from the Manitoba Organization for Victim Assistance.

If a registered gun was stolen from a home, information from the registry could help in the investigation, said Kolevris.

Ahh ... so now it is The Caring Class who must be appeased! Because ... those who "work with victims" have a superior grasp of right and wrong?

Hardly...

Yes ... we register our vehicles .... but the laws that mandate the registration of vehicles ... Do Not ... empower law enforcement to invade people's homes or confiscate private property.

Neither do the laws which mandate the registration of vehicles allow for arbitrary criminalization of vehicle owners through bureaucratic fiats which allow faceless and unaccountable "public servants" to determine that one sort of vehicle is suddenly illegal and ownership of it banned.

In the same veign the registration of a vehicle does not entail the gathering of intrusive personal information or depend on arbitrary back ground investigations by ... again ... unaccountable bureaucrats. Nor do the registrations become subject to the whims of potentially hostile people ... who for no other reason than their own whims may make unfounded accusations about what a that vehcile owner owns ... that may result in aformentioned intrusions by law enforcement and arbitrary confiscation of said privat property.

Not to mention the resulting criminal charges that would be ... in many cases have been ... the result of such laws.

I wonder if the caring Holly would like to go through the same sort of process that gun owners go through ... when she renews her dirvers licence? Or would care to experience a random inspection and search of her private home based on a law that mandates such excesses for vehicle ownership.

Or maybe ... we can include other mundane things? Perhaps appliances... power tools... lawn mowers.

I wonder if Holly and her friends are parents? Perhaps having one's children removed from her home under laws that allow this on the basis of the sort of laws she seems to like would be OK with her too?

We are hearing some disturbing news in regard to just what exactly the Conservative government is really planning to do.

We ... unfortunately ... have a government that is far from conservative in thought and deed.
Rather ... the Harper coalition of old school PCs ... politically opportunistic Liberals masquerading as Red Tories and Quebec first weasels, has precious few (if any) champions of individual rights who have any sense of respect for the principles of private property, self determination and personal responsibility.

And so ... with the long gun registry coming to an end, we have the prospect of the Federal Government kowtowing to all of the same ilk that were promoting the egregious over reaching and unwarranted legislation in the first place.

So called "Public Safety Groups" are spouting off and getting usual public platform from the compliant and unquestioning mainstream media. Although the MSM ... as always fails to define just what these groups actually are and who they consist of. Be assured that feminist hysterics and their fellow travellers in the world of the self righteous and meddlesome finger waging nurse nannyists are lobbying hard to have restrictions increased on the lawful ownership and use of firearms.

Add to that the same bunch from the National Organisation of Police Chiefs ... who have been at the forefront of demanding greater curbs and more power to intrude on pretty much anything that ordinary citizens do.

And of course the RCMP brass who seem to think it is their right to determine what Canadians may and may not do with their own property.

These groups are using the same false assertions ... the same fear mongering tactics and the same bullying that they used in defending the former Liberals in implementing an unnecessary and fundamentally unjust system of regulation on Canadians. The fact that the implementation was and continues to be a prima facie example of all the things that are wrong with government regulation that is created to mollify ideological sub groups of our society. The fact that as a whole Canadians never wanted or felt any need for such an institution as the registry and certainly no justification for the associated cost of maintaining the bureaucracy that goes along with it, the fact that there never was a sound justification nor in reality an basis in fact for the claims of long gun registry proponents has not and still doe not keep them from spewing their nonsense.

So what exactly is the government planning to do?

The fact that the Long Gun Registry is being scrapped primarily because of the unjustifiable cost does not mean that our morally meek CINOs will actually scrap the whole thing.

They can get away with pandering to the alarmist anti-gun hysterics in keeping a significant section of the legislation in force along with a trimmed down bureaucracy that taxpayers will still be funding and that will still exist for no reason other than the appeasment of people who care nothing for your rights or freedoms.

Other troubling possibilities are that under pressure from the anti-gun activist lobby ... the government may reclassify many weapons into the restricted or prohibitted categories.

As it stands .... we have the strong possibility that the so called scrapping of the long gun registry is just going to be a re-packaging and that we will be no better off than before in the matter of private property rights and the right to NOT have unwarranted bureaucratic and law enforcement intrusions in our lives and our homes.

I often wonder exactly what inspires some writers to carry a story to its most logical conclusion.
One such story is the Billy Wilder tale for which he borrowed from a real life story about Floyd Collins who perished in a cave in 1925 after a local newspaper created a national media sensation while covering his plight. Another claimed (in the wiki notes) inspiration was the "Girl in the well" in 1949 media circus in San Marino CA however this seems like maybe less inspiration than motivation in my estimation.

Apparently ... Wilder's secretary answered a phone call from a screenwriter named Victor Desny in 1949 ... who pitched the idea of making a film from the story of Floyd Collins... and later successfully (eventually as the first case was tossed) sued Wilder's production company for plagiarism.

Now the reason I'm interested in this whole deal is because the film was shown just this week on TCM and although I've seen it a few times before this is the first that it really struck me how much of this media news cycle management we see today.
As we look into stories that have come and gone ... or come and stayed ... or get recycled ad nauseum ... it is fairly apparent that Wilder's portrayal of the motivation and methodology is pretty damned astute. In the 1950s or 60s it may have been easy to shrug off this story as an exaggeration of events and the product of the wild imagination of a Hollywood producer. Even in the day though there may have been some who saw this as fairly accurate. Given the response of some newspapers of the day one can almost feel that we are listening to the NY Times or WaPo protesting some criticism of their own journalistic malfeasance....( The Hollywood Reporter called it "ruthless and cynical...a distorted study of corruption and mob psychology that...is nothing more than a brazen, uncalled-for slap in the face of two respected and frequently effective American institutions - democratic government and the free press."... from wiki)
What we see in the current day efforts of media mainstreamers so closely resembles the machinations of the lone reporter that it has prompted some members of our present day media culture to comment on the "au currant" feel of the story.
I concur .... and I suspect that if Billy Wilder were around today he'd have a lot to say about this situation.

The upshot is that for all the money and effort put into manufacturing news these days .... the actual methods follow what was essentially a scathingly ruthless portrayal of that lone wolf ... loose cannon sort from the 1950s. Today we have multi billion dollar organizations who can do no better than this and it is as if the whole world of media / journalism seem to feel it is their right to emulate the loathsome character of "Chuck Tatum" ... without of course having the courage to take the risks the movie's anti hero undertook.

One of the many nice things we found on the trip was at my old high school friend's place....

US gasoline prices per gallon run anywhere from $3.40 for regular to about $3.80 depending on what state and city you are in .......that compares to over $5 per in Canada .... combine that with generally better roads and more options on driving routes and it makes our Socialist Paradise look pretty useless..... or actually .... proves how useless our socialist state really is.

Ice in the arctic has been declining more each summer, and even the oldest ice in the arctic, which is the thickest and most resistant to melting, has begun to dwindle.

“This is man-made; there seems to be little doubt in that,” Serreze said. “It would be reversible if we were to do something about our carbon dioxide emissions, [but] I don’t see much of a fat chance in hell we’re going to see any change here. We’re going to have to adapt.”

Now let's get to the real meat of the issue with you Mags .... the fact that outside of mandatory reading lists on "Womyn's Lit" courses ... the only people buying your books are the public libraries.

And ... surely .... outside of those Mom / Caregiver plus kids outings to the public book repositories the only people you are likely to see there are the chronically underemployed ... reading magazines and napping. Not exactly the Mags Atwood reading demographic.... eh? Aside from that .... these expensive vending outlets which are staffed by pensioned public employees are pretty much unused and empty of human souls.

So while this overrated Fembot author gets all up in arms over her precious concept of what a "Public Library" is supposed to be .... the fact remains that taxpayers (not reclusive hags living in the woods without electricity) are footing the bill for a lot of underused real estate, staff and content.

A simple solution? Provide the head count for these libraries and compare it to the intended utilization.... just like teachers do when figuring out out how many kids they feel like teaching.

Certainly the activists weren't unarmed as Mr. Dunstan has claimed. The Israeli soldiers only used lethal force when their lives were at risk (which they clearly were as demonstrated by the video evidence). Keep in mind that the soldiers were deployed with paint-ball guns in a posture fitting of a riot-dispersal scenario. They certainly wouldn't use live ammo only on people who pelted them with "fruit" and "rocks" as Mr. Dunstan has stated.

Stuff like that and the daily goofs on the web site main page that is rife with misstatements, spelling and grammatical errors.
It may be hard to find a J-school grad these days who actually can spell and use English but they had better figure out how to get some skills in the staff who write and produce for Sun TV or they will soon find themselves relegated to the same pile of crap that Global and CTV inhabit.

As for Dunstan .... that's where he belongs.......
