Quebec --- A Nation Within? - I Don't think so...

Simple question: Is Quebec (The Province) a Nation Within the Nation of Canada?

OR

Are we suffering the effects of Balkanism in our own country?

I'm leaning toward the Balkanism idea......a region torn apart by petty intransigent groups from within.

I'm at odds about this. My husband's family are francophone - but they don't consider themselves Quebecois. In fact, they consider that an insult. They consider themselves Acadian, though my husband fairly recently learned that he is Metis, too. Both groups see themselves as a "nation" - but it's cultural. They are anti-seperatist.

Then there's the First Nations, etc. All recognised as nations within the nation of Canada. Now Quebecois is recognised as a nation.

It shouldn't be any different - but it is. I have few reservations in recognising, say, the Cree or the Metis, etc. as nations. But Quebecois? We're talking about a group that wants to seperate from Canada - and seems to think it can do so while keeping current borders, and all the sovreignity association claptrap. To me, that's a pile of treasonous bull and shouldn't have been tolerated - sometimes outright encouraged - by the federal government. The whole idea that a seperatist party can even be allowed to run federally is rediculous.

My emotional response is basically .....WTF?
BUT thinking about examples Like Britain where Wales is essentially the same type of arrangement......
However ..one thing needs to made perfectly clear and that's ONE SET OF LAWS for ALL!

It's been said before, "We are all equal, it's just some people are more equal than others"

It may be said that "Some are more equal...."
That does not mean that we have to tolerate it!

Quebec separating? I vote Winnipeg out. What does it mean to this great nation? Zero. It has no identity, save for cheesey cliches from South-Of-The-Border sitcoms. Keep Quebec, attach Manitoba to something its more akin to, say, west virginia. It can be northern retreat for coal miners!

I love the idea, way to go Stevie! Lets hope now we can put this debate behind us and enjoy the Nation we both share and love. Vive la Quebec! Vive la Canada!
.
Hey now I won't have to continue with my letter campaign and sending money favors to Washington Congressmen and Senators for our swap of the province of Quebec for the State of Minnesota. We still want Minnesota minus Tim Pawlenty. We could trade Hans Island? You guys in Washington like Danishes right? I'll start a new campaign.
.
P.S. George, Go ahead and deposit that last money order I sent (spend Wisely).

North end Winnipeg should definitely be recognized as a nation within the nation of Winnipeg.
