Maybe They Told People About It

Of course it is easier and more convenient to .... Blame The Economy

WIARTON, Ont. - Wiarton Willie will have to go it alone this year when he emerges from his lair on Groundhog Day.

The town of South Bruce Peninsula, Ont., tried auctioning off the "Groundhog experience" on eBay with a reserve bid of just under $750.

Economic development officer Danielle Mulasmajic says no bids came in before the auction closed Friday.

She blames the economic downturn and says the town will try another auction in a few years.

The experience was successfully auctioned off last year to a Calgary family for $1,700.

So just maybe last year's winners told someone how much they actually enjoyed it.

Or maybe they did really enjoy it a lot.

Who knows?

I've been to Wiarton quite a few times having grown up not too far away. It's not a bad place... but the show of waking up and provoking a stinking rodent is not enough of a reason to make me want to be there in February.

Word to the wise for the Chamber of Commerce in Wiarton ..... spend some effort educating your service industry and maybe people will actually want to come back.
