Wendesday Is "Hump Day" !

IN spite of all the really tragic and disgusting things going on around the world I thought that I'd focus a little closer to home. I could have gone on about KH Schreiber or OJ or Ted Kennedy or Hugo Chavez or Billary Klinton or Dick Warman or any other of the vast legion of people I view as basically worthless pimples on the buttocks of society. But just because it is close to home and so plainly gratuitous ......... I give you Canadian Press :

In another example of "experts" on speed dial ....

"2010 Winter Olympic mascots brushed off as Pokemon modern"

at 8:40 on November 28, 2007, EST.
By THE CANADIAN PRESS
Jonathan Hayward

VANCOUVER - The move by Vancouver Olympic organizers to go with three mythical creatures for mascots may be a mistake according to one marketing expert.

According to Lindsay Meredith, mascots Sumi, Quatchi and Miga are Pokemon modern. The Simon Fraser University marketing professor says it's difficult to sell something that needs explaining.

He says the Sea Bear, Sasquatch and Spirit Animal all need explaining.

He points out a sasquatch is known in B.C. and Washington State, but few others in North America know that big foot and sasquatch are the same.

However Meredith notes Olympic rings on a product always help something sell.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not that Meredith doesn't have a point about the trouble with using Icons like this......
From a strictly focussed POV in the realm of purely marketing and branding theory.

It's just that these arguments are strictly academic and the reality of the Olympics is that teaching the world about some of the host nations traditions is part and parcel of the show.

For Hayward and CP to go in search his "expert" to support a completely uncalled for and unnecessary negative story is simply bullshit. A gratuitous and small minded attempt to taint what is supposed to be an event of celebration and noble effort.

For his most ignoble effort and for their willingness to print the garbage Jonathan Hayward and CP are officially by my decree:

Ok, so he's a marketing *professor* but he thinks Americans don't know that sasquatch is the same species as bigfoot? He just lost all credibility right there.

EVERYONE knows that sasquatch is the same as bigfoot.

Geez.

I can't say what "everyone knows" but I can say that the only reason we heard from the professor was because the so called journalist needed some credibility to help him justify his little fabrication.

Dunno OMMAG,

One of the problems with these “mythical creatures” as mascots is that you have to explain them not only to “the world” but to nearly every Canuk as well, including BC’ans and Vancouverites. Also this reflexive deference to aboriginal “traditions” for every bloody event is getting very, very tiresome.

FYI, here’s a sample
of what the locals in my Victoria neighbourhood think.

Well JR first allow me to thank you for that background.

I see that as a different discussion hewever.
IMO - whether or not these mascot characters are representative of the the Province as a whole or the broader Canadian identity is what should have been determined by the committee(s) that selected them. Whether or not there was a failure in that process, a lack of creative originality or whatever other failings. An issue that should have been resolved well before these announcements came.

If there is controversy that lingers from that process then that should be the story! You have done the work that these so called professionals should have done.

This reporter and CP get my thumbs down because of HOW they chose to manufacture a story.

If there is a real story and a real controversy as you seem to have shown .... that only makes their behaviour even more reprehensible.

I see this as obvious laziness and dishonesty on their part.

Cheers!
