Did You Know .....

That personal security for ex LIberal PMs Martin and Chretien cost you $700 k a year?

From Sun News Group

Canadians paid more than $700,000 for Mountie bodyguards to keep former prime ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin safe and secure over the past three years, Sun Media has learned.

Documents obtained through Access to Information show RCMP VIP policing costs for Martin totalled $442,000 for the two years since he was defeated in the January 2006 election, including round-the-clock police protection when he ventures out in public. Chretien's security tab topped $260,000 between January 2005 and March 2008.

RCMP Sgt. Nathalie Deschenes could not discuss specific operational details, but said security is requested or assigned to former prime ministers based on perceived risk. The level of protective service varies and often depends on how recently the prime minister has left office, she said.

I think these two should pay for their own damned security out of the sizeable lifetime incomes they already receive courtesy of the taxpayer!

History has shown that Jean Chretien is perfectly capable of defending himself...

Actually, I picked up a newspaper in Thunder Bay in the late 80's. It was a real eye-opener. Article after article seemed to the be based on the assumption that Canadians were helpless without the intervention of an omipresent government entity.
This of course was the exact opposite of how Yanks are (or were)raised, to be independent and to view government lawyers, social workers and poli-sci grads as repulsive corpse-breathed leprous (sorry, lepers)alien jag-dork fecal-caked flea-bitten lousy fly-blown snot-faced curs. Or commies.

Being young and somewhat hazy about the whole Commonwealth thing, I just figured the Canadian penchant for submissiveness in the face of bureaucracy came from generations of being subjects and not citizens.
