The best thing the big three can do is file for bankruptcy. Dump the top third of salaries (white and blue collar), and thin out their beaurocracy.
Then come back to the government, and show them what you've done to trim the fat.
I have no sympathy. Pick up Michael Moore's Roger and Me. He may be a pariah to the right, but this film speaks volumes to how the auto industry works.

It's the only worthwhile things he's ever done. Except for maybe his brief TV show ... he had two guys from the Balkans sit at a table and have a pizza..
