Targeting Children

It always seems just a little too obvious to me that the primary purpose of social networking and so called "free" internet services are not benefit the people who use them.

They are... plain and simple ...schemes for gathering personal information that can be sold for a profit.

Not that people would likely stop using them ... even if they knew the full extent of the information gathering and its subsequent dissemination most people would still continue to access the web sites of Google ... Yahoo.... YouTube .... Facebook and all the others .... because they do not really care.

It should be obvious to everyone who uses these applications and services that this is the case. In fact there is no reason that I can see for these folks to even hide the fact. Why the should not put their user information and disclaimers up front and why the get away with burying the information deep in the terms of service pages... which I find kind of humorous in the way they actually go to the trouble of using small type fonts in these web docs.
No reason at all for these feeble attempts to keep the real nature of their business out of plain site. Except that is ... because they are just a little be worried about blowback at some point.

This is all well and good when dealing with adults or people self identifying as adult but when it comes to kids there is a real problem.

You see ... children by definition are incapable of providing legal assent ... so by definition the information gathered from children is illegal.

Some people might just say Creepy ... (as Are We Lumberjacks? Roger does) .

Net Neutrality ... Will Be Defined by Bureaucrats

As covered in the Washington Times .....

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is poised to add the Internet to its portfolio of regulated industries. The agency's chairman, Julius Genachowski, announced Wednesday that he circulated draft rules he says will "preserve the freedom and openness of the Internet." No statement could better reflect the gulf between the rhetoric and the reality of Obama administration policies.

With a straight face, Mr. Genachowski suggested that government red tape will increase the "freedom" of online services that have flourished because bureaucratic busybodies have been blocked from tinkering with the Web. Ordinarily, it would be appropriate at this point to supply an example from the proposed regulations illustrating the problem. Mr. Genachowski's draft document has over 550 footnotes and is stamped "non-public, for internal use only" to ensure nobody outside the agency sees it until the rules are approved in a scheduled Dec. 21 vote. So much for "openness."

My view of the internet in general has been that it works like a public forum where anyone can grab a soapbox and let loose .... in the same veign .... anyone and everyone is free to ignore what they do not like.

Government bureaucrats HATE freedom .... Commies and their ilk do as well .... and now you can kiss your freedom to roam the public avenues of the web as you please goodbye.

As If It Was Ever In Doubt !

From farmers to rig workers, lumberjacks to stay at home mothers, engineers to researchers, entrepreneurs to students, there are plenty of us who figured out what the mass media were all about without anyone to spell it out for us.

Maybe the audience is simply smarter than you are ! should become the standard retort to any of the self justifying BS offered up by the MSMers in defense of the "Work" they do.

For my money the "work" they do isn't worth a damn except for a very few cases and it does not take a guided tour through the internet and written instructions to figure out the difference.

What the internet has done is make it virtually impossible to ignore the falsity of these cretins and their claims to integrity and professional standards.

Plenty of examples In the archives .... and still .... More.

The question that should be at the front of the mind today is "How could there be any doubt?"

Words Words Words....

The other day a used the word perspicuity ......

It was bothering me that I could not get spell checker to recognize it .... two days later I realized that in the first place I had misspelled it as perpiscuity and that in fact I should have used the term perspicacity!

The thing that gets me about this is that even the misspelled word can be found in examples on the web ....... there is a moral in there somewhere.
