I love how the sort of people who jump on environmental bandwagons  are always so certain they are doing something really important.

Donna LaFramboise ...elaborates on the actual facts behind the "Earth Hour" charade:

".... Earth Hour is, instead, the brainchild of two large corporate entities – the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Fairfax Media Limited.
I’ve discussed the size and reach of the WWF previously. The short version is that it has offices in 30 countries and employs 5,000 people. In 2010, its international operating revenues amounted to almost 3/4 of a billion dollars."

How many times have you heard the same sort of  noisy pest at one moment lecturing about the evils of international conglomerates and big corporations and at the next praising the WWF and it's allies for "saving the world"?

Well ... it just goes to show that P.T. Barnum was underestimating the statistic when he admonished that there was "... a sucker born every minute!" These days they are not only being born but manufactured.
As uninformed types continue to buy into every scam that  comes along, the likes of the WWF and their associates continue to rake in the dough. They are very effective at orchestrating stunts like the "Earth Hour" and they are very effective at raking in money from the uninformed ... the misguided and the simply stupid. They are also VERY effective at using that money to support political activists and hacks that make it possible for them to continue the money raking.

Let it be clear ... There is no benefit to the world ....in any way shape or form ...  from these people enriching themselves. The World Wildlife Fund contributes nothing of any substance to the world.
Playing blindly into the stunts like "Earth Hour" benefits no one except those who manufactured and continue to promote the pointless exercise. In fact doing so simply demonstrates the gullibility, ignorance or simple stupidity of the participants.

My lights will continue to burn brightly.

I May See a Trend ...........

It's been done before .... an outdoors enthusiast faced with impending decrepitude decides to go out doing the thing they love  most to do.

I am reminded of the true story where a well heeled professional ... diagnosed with a terminal health problem ... spent a sizeable chunk of his estate and the last of his vitality on a non-stop helli-skiing vacation in the BC Rockies. Over the years, there have been cases of sky divers taking a last big jump .... surfers swimming out to sea or just giving it all up to a Hawaiian North Shore wave. A paraglider or pilot who flies off into the wild blue yonder... or a mountaineer hanging it all out on an impossible rock or ice wall. Sailors ... on a last single handed and one way trip to the end of the earth. A big game hunter facing down a charge ... but not taking the shot. A warrior's last stand ... a blaze of glory .....

Well ... there might be a certain elegance and esthetic symetry to going out with a bang ...

Solitude, UT - A 74-year-old Rhode Island man died in a skiing accident on Jan. 31 at Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah, First Tracks!! Online has learned. Keystone, CO - Keystone Resort in Colorado recorded its third death in as many weeks on Tuesday. William Emberton, 72, of Stonington, Conn., was found face down in the snow alongside Keystone's expert Geronimo run on Tuesday afternoon. Emberton died of traumatic brain injury and a broken neck, according to the Summit County Coroner's Office. He was wearing a helmet. Friday afternoon The US FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp) a government agency that is supposed to be responsible for helping to insure that small depositors can feel safe about their money in US banks. Banks pay a fee (insurance premium) so the FDIC has a fund to supply up to a fixed amount. The current rules allow for $100,000 per account and for retirement savings (IRAs) $250,000.

Just to provide a little bit of history on the FDIC .... they are broke. They do not have the funds to cover their current obligations and have been over extended since mid year (2009).

But to listen to FDIC Chairman Shiela C. Bair tell it, they have a magic money tree to go to.

Now in case this sounds reasonable to you let's just back up and take a broader look at the situation.

There has never been a case of any government being able to print money without the consequence of devaluing the currency. Neither can any government, person or business borrow it's way out of debt.

Not ever not the Phoenicians, not the Egyptians not Rome, not any European nation, not any third world kleptocracy.

The more money a government prints the less it is worth. Period.

Now what this tool Shiela C. Bair is telling us is that she has a magic way of protecting people's money while borrowing and while forcing the very banks that are suffering financial harm to accelerate the process and by forcing government to print money to pay for her plans.

None of these things have ever worked in the past and none ever will.

The consequences of continuing on this path are worthless money (hyper-inflation), unrecoverable debt (bankruptcy) and complete economic failure (catastrophe).

Shiela C. Bair displays a complete ignorance of history and economic reality and yet political masters have placed her in charge of the financial security of millions.

The USA is in a deep and dangerous place ( and the rest of us as well), thanks to those who would allow this to go on.

British Columbia slapped a moratorium on all uranium exploration !

Apparently for the BC government "Not Liking" a commodity is good enough reason to shut down an entire industry! Apparently all those regulatory control that the province has are of no value either. Else why the need to stop the EXPLORATION business?

".....But there remains the little matter of why the B.C. government felt the need to act with such finality, and so precipitously. It's certainly not because the government was convinced of any environmental or health peril posed by uranium mining. “Saskatchewan has proved, and is proving every day, that uranium can be mined responsibly,” Mr. Krueger says.

That might seem like a solid rationale for allowing carefully scrutinized exploration to proceed. Wrong. “We'll leave our uranium in the ground, and that's what the public wants,” says Mr. Krueger, adding that the Liberals have no intention of changing course later, come what may. “That's a forever position, as far as this government is concerned.”

The reason is simple enough. The public doesn't like uranium, therefore the government has banned it. A good deal of the public opposition has come from the direction of the Big White ski resort, which would be within sight of the proposed mine. And Mr. Krueger mentions that B.C. won't need the uranium itself, since it has no need for nuclear power...."

This isn't the first time the BC government has helped to put a nail in the future of resource industries. BC Kills Alcan plans to build Hydro facility!

Apparently optics and aesthetics outrank the importance of having an economic base. All well and good perhaps for well heeled retirees or out of province property owners who treat BC like their personal recreation area. Good too (maybe) for tourism operators who reap the rewards of that crowd. But, BC isn't sustainable as a retirement community or a tourist destination.

The hard reality is that Resource Development and Exploitation IS the business of BC and is what sustains the economy and puts roofs over the heads of the majority of BC residents and food on their plates.

And don't get me started on the forestry industry and the complete failure of the provincial government to deal with the pine bark beetle infestation and the bug wood fallout!

I predict that BC will soon be wondering why their economy is in the tank.

Evolution of the Blog-O-Sphere ... Mainstreaming

One of my favorite blogs is The Gates of Vienna. They are much more than a simple source of news that often falls outside the mainstream. They have in my opinion established a high water mark for intelligent and focussed discussion of the issues that we all must face in today's reality.

Apparently TOO much outside the mainstream for Pyjamas Media .....

Is how author Baron Bodissey of The Gates of Vienna blog Describes the situation...

And goes on to discuss the reasons for the parting of ways. Essentially, it seems that Pyjamas Media have become "Mainstream" .... at least mainstream in a commercial sense that will forevermore constrain their contributors to ideas that will not bring their advertisers into any controversial sort of contentious issue.

Many people who choose to observe and discuss such things have been asking the question of what will happen to blogs when they become commercial enterprises. Will they behave as the current MSM behave?

The answer is ..... YES ... emphatically! IMO

For he who pays the piper calls the tune.

Although did these sponsors not realize what they were buying into when they bought in? Or, is it a case of someone upping the ante and making demands after the fact?

For My Money .... I am hoping that the truly insightful and controversial postings of the Gates of Vienna as well as numerous other blogs and bloggers that have something of substance to add... outside of mainstream opinion and Bowdlerized Pap ..... will continue to develop in their own direction!

Weather Is News !

Indulging in Schadenfreude !

Given the large amount of snow we've had and especially in the last few weeks and given that we are about two weeks from the official start of Spring .... I can understand a certain amount of interest in how our Canadian Winter is evolving.

But! .... In my heart I know that this is CANADA where we are living and that we may well have ... Cold Weather and Snow and all the usual things that happen between the months of November and May. We may even have major snowstorms in May for that matter. It's all happened before and there is NO reason to think that it cannot happen again.

So, as I watch the news reports this morning where our intrepid CBC reporters are telling us how difficult things are in Ontario and how deeply weary those poor denizens of Ottawa are of the winter, I just cannot help experiencing a twinge of satisfaction at the lessons that are being imposed on those folks who seem to think that they are somehow immune from these realities.

For those stranded would be travelers who have had their larks to warmer climates postponed or otherwise interfered with ..... I admit to indulging in a small measure of satisfaction at the predicament. After all ..... those vacations are hardly matters of great import to anyone but the self indulgent folks who are affected.

Winter! May it last until it's over !

We in Canada are not immune from it no matter where in the country we reside or do business.
And just as a matter of fairness and to keep some otherwise oblivious people in mind of WHERE we live and the NATURE of our physical world ...... I say keep it coming!
