While we were away to Florida's Gulf Coast, a friend in Winnipeg was bemoaning the unrelenting cold that he was suffering from. Apparently, many areas of the city were experiencing frozen water mains and supply lines from the mains to the houses. Home owners were advised to keep a cold water tap trickling to allow water to move and stave off a completely blocked line.

After returning, we heard from some who were affected. They called the city works to be told that they were 800 on the list.

Now, granted there is no way the city can predict that the weather would remain so cold for so long. However, it is not a new thing and we've had similar problems before. In fact, there are locations that freeze and rupture almost every winter in this city.

The problem is not that the weather is unpredictable. The problem is that the city has consistently refused to perform upgrades and repairs in a planned and proactive manner.

Just one of the problems we share with decaying and corrupt shitholes around the world.

Health Canada ...

The folks at Health Canada who run the "Marijuana Medical Access Program" look like they may be sampling the goods. Putting out information letters to 40,000 program clients with the program department identified on the envelope addressing.

The program participants are guaranteed anonymity because it is medical service.

An excerpt:

This week the 50-something medical marijuana grower and patient was stunned when she received an envelope in the mail from Health Canada with her name, address and the printing for anyone to see: "Marihuana Medical Access Program."
"I cried at my mailbox when I saw that, it was so upsetting. I have never been so embarrassed. I was in a panic,"

Health Canada confirmed to QMI Agency Thursday the woman was one of 40,000 to receive informational letters on upcoming changes to the Marihuana Medical Access Program.
In a statement, George Da Pont, deputy minister of Health, said he had been advised that because of an administrative error the envelopes were labelled to indicate they were sent by the medical marijuana program. "This is not standard Health Canada practice. On behalf of Health Canada, I deeply regret this administrative error. Health Canada is taking steps to ensure this does not happen again." 

The woman is concerned that someone who saw the envelope at the small post office could talk about it to others, making her and her husband a target for thieves looking for marijuana or a subject for public ridicule.

"They used to be discrete. I believe with the program ending they don't really care anymore. They put us up as a target," she said.

American Pickers vs Canadian Pickers

I have to confess .... when I first saw the listing on the TV show American Pickers I thought they were going to do a documentary on country guitar players..................

So after the show came on the air .... or more accurately onto the fiber optic backbone of North America..... I was a little surprised to see a pair of shabby looking guys driving around in a Mercedes Sprinter cargo van and dropping in on farm yards and people's homes scattered around the back roads of America. Well ... it makes sense after all .... and I soon became a fan of the show.
The appeal ... to me... seems obvious in that just about everyone I know has a bit of a collection of small and sometimes large objects of interest. Whether it is items that have been passed down through the family or things picked up over the years there is in nearly every one's life and home something that would be called a "pick". So .... as I see it ... there is a natural point of shared interest in these sorts of things that spans a pretty large part of our society without regard for demographic segments.

The show seems to have become a success and from my POV keeps getting better .... it is a bit of an addiction for me.

So, I was curious when they started advertising "Canadian Pickers" .... a show distributed by the History Television network.

After watching the first few episodes it became patently obvious that our intrepid Canadian Pickers duo are being let down in a big way by the shows producers. Unfortunately so .... because these guys come across as being eminately likable and really interested in the hunt and finding of little treasures. Sadly in the usual manner of our home grown media production industry the show lacks any sense of love or effort. Instead of our team of pickers going out into the boonies to find any real characters or real hidden treasure troves, these poor suckers have been shunted from one junk store to another to roadside tourist trap rip-off joints to commonplace flea markets.

Sad........ the usual Canadian Me Tooism .... take a great idea with a proven track record and try to duplicate the success of that idea by simply transplanting the geography. It smacks of the all too typical results of the soulless, talentless hacks that dominate our media production industry. I'll bet the producers never bothered to leave their Toronto offices to find those venues for Scott Cozen and Sheldon Smithen to explore. Really too bad .... because these guys come across as really likable.


The winners - American Pickers ......Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz get the kind of opportunities they really need to make the show interesting because the people behind the scenes actually work at making it happen.

Canadian Pickers .... sadly .... reeks of Government Subsidy dependant .... half-assed ... amateurism that ruins a great opportunity for everyone else.

Green strategies ... Studying what works and does not work in forcing local governments to bow to green activist demands.

Note that in California it is illegal to have trees that block a solar panel or a wind turbine. No matter that the trees were there first or that the equipment is improperly installed and cannot work in any case ... home owners have been forced to cut or remove trees.

Every time some ignorant joker gets a tax break or some grant money out of our tax trough in order to try his hand at being energy smart we are witnessing our hard earned cash being wasted. Make no mistake about it ... these things do not work as they are advertized to do and without you and I footing the bill 99.99% of the jokers who install them would never do it.

Add to this situation the fact that governments at all levels in their eagerness to appear enlightened (which really means being too stupid and spineless) instead of standing up to green busybodies are caving in. It is because of the organized strategy of green activist groups and useful stooges in the legal and public sector that ordinary citizens end up paying for all this.

You and I should have the right to get our money back.

Internet Installer Rats Out Apartment Dweller

For having a toy gun!

Big pants wetting drama as Winnipeg police pull an armed assault on the mans suite after a (MTS? or Shaw?) tech called them to report seeing a "Baretta" in the apartment.

The police arrived about an hour after a telecommunications technician had been at the suite working on an Internet connection within feet of where a plastic toy handgun -- which had been used as a movie prop -- sat on a shelf.

Leckie soon realized the toy had prompted the employee to call police, who arrived with what he described as a "red laser scope rifle" pointed at his chest. But that knowledge didn't make the police search of his apartment any more pleasant, as he was handcuffed and questioned before the officers left upon discovering the mix-up.


The former University of Winnipeg student said he's not particularly angry at the police, "given all the gun crime in our city." But said the gun was clearly a fake.

Eh?

Well I guess it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy then!
